counselling

What is counselling?

Counselling generally focuses on short-term difficulties about a specific crisis or issue and exploring solutions to enable you to manage these difficulties. The number of counselling sessions will vary from person to person. The strength and safety developed in out theraputic relationship, the nature of your concerns and your committment to exploring new ways of being in your life are all factors that determine the number of sessions. Longer-term engagement offers an opportunity to explore and reflect more deeply on the full landscape of your life. A longer process may allow you to develop stronger self-awareness helping you understand, integrate and transform life's challenges.

If you are ready to take action and counselling would assist, please call Russ on 0404 002 646.

about

About

Russ (he/him) on Gadigal Land

I grew up on Awabakal land (Newcastle and the Hunter). I now resided on Gadigal land (Sydney) and have been here for most of my adult working life.

Before studying to be a counselling, I was consumed by everything food and hospitality. Whether I was creating desserts, catering for the multitudes or managing gourmet businesses, my enthusiasm for food has left an unforgettable imprint on all of my senses. I still get enormous joy from preparing and sharing food. It's part of my self care strategy for reducing stress, improving social connections and keeping me grounded.

Since 2008, my professional focus has been on counselling. I have developed a collaborative approach to therapy that includes person centred, humanistic and mindfulness practices. This approach allows us to explore the best ways forward in assisting you to take responsibility for your lived experiences. The trust that is built within our therapeutic relationship is core to the quality of the counselling process. Life can be overwhelming and painful at times. Counselling allows you a safe place to explore your concerns and world views. Counselling can help you to identify, understand and consider these concerns and views, that may be impacting on the choices you are currently making. Making more informed choices can improve your overall quality of life.

Counselling can also improve your awareness of how to better manage difficult times in your life. Through the counselling process, we will work towards building healthier relationships, cultivating ways of being in your own life that yield better outcomes and learn how you can experience individual freedom, love, health and happiness.

You may be questioning your relationships, levels of intimacy or have sexual health concerns. You may be confronted by everyday anxieties that have grown out of past events and life transitions. I am passionate and well informed in working with people from lesbian, gay, bi+, trans and queer (LGBTQ+) communities. Throughout my counselling career, I have been fortunate to work closely with the trans and gender diverse communities and people living with HIV.

As well as private practice, I work with the older LGBTQ+ community as Program Coordinator for Ageing at ACON, better known as the LOVE Project or Living Older Visibly and Engaged. I am passionate about healthy ageing, improving social connections and understanding the impacts of ageism. You are welcome to ask any questions if you feel you might benefit from this project.
